Colledge du leman.

General information.
Shortly before 1960, the Swiss authorities in Geneva requested that Francis A. Clivaz create an international school on the Lac Leman's right bank. The raison d'etre for this institution was to accommodate the growing number of students coming from international backgrounds seeking education in this region. Francis Clivaz was fortunate to acquire the former "Institut Monnier". At that time there was only one building on campus, and apart from the soccer field and tennis courts it was surrounded by grass fields and fruit trees.

A few kilometers away from Geneva and the site of the European headquarters of the United Nations, College du Leman is located in Versoix, on an attractive and extensive campus of 8 hectares.

The country town of Versoix, with its 11'000 residents, benefits from the abundant cultural opportunities, the stores and international transport links of nearby Geneva, yet is far enough to be outside the bustle of urban life.

There are 14 classroom buildings containing: 96 classrooms, 4 science laboratories, one media centre, 3 computer complexes, one library with internet facility. The library also contains an expansive collection of books, periodicals and reference materials, which are an excellent resource to students and staff.

A new building in process of completion will provide by January 2002 a library, a theatre, 6 science laboratories, 2 computer rooms, 17 classrooms, a fitness center, music complex and photographic lab.

Sports facilities are also at the disposal of our home teams, 3 sheltered tennis and basketball courts, a football and softball field, a running track, a swimming pool, a judo room and a fitness room.

The creation of unity out of diversity: this is perhaps the most significant strand running through the fabric of College du Leman since 1960. The school’s mission is to provide an educational setting in which children of many national, racial, linguistic and cultural backgrounds will have the opportunity of realizing their individual potential. The international character of our school is based on the fact that no national ethos predominates. Students learn to live and react in a multi-cultural environment, which is a microcosm of the world in general.

The following statements embody the main objectives of the school's philosophy:
To foster respect for the basic values of truth, trust, personal integrity, respect for others and concern for their welfare.
To foster an understanding of our natural environment, of its fragility, of our dependence upon it and our responsibility for preserving it.
To develop analytical, critical and inquiring attitudes, to learn to distinguish between conflicting ideas and to make independent judgments.
To provide an academic education of high quality, so that, subsequent to graduation or transfer to another school, our students may successfully pursue their studies.
To encourage new teaching and learning processes.
Academic program.
The high level of education offered at College du Leman results from 40 years of sound pedagogical experience. In Pre-school, Primary and High School, we offer two academic programs: one taught in English, preparing for entrance into colleges and universities in North America, Europe and throughout the world, through the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the GCE "A" Level international examinations set by Cambridge University, and the other, with instruction in French, preparing for the French Baccalaureat and the Swiss Federal Maturite - including the bilingual French-English Maturite also leading to entrance into universities throughout the world.

All students are required to study French, starting from Pre-school, and those with a good command in the other language may pursue its study at a first-language level. In the secondary school, German, Spanish or Italian is taught in both sections. Moreover, all students may follow additional after school language classes.

A unique aspect of CDL life has always been the well-being of its residential students. In an atmosphere of sharing and mutual regard, students learn values of co-operation, friendship and respect for the many diverse cultures and beliefs.

A Boarding House Director for boys and one for girls live alongside the students and residence counselors on campus. Both the Directors and the counselors are at the students' disposal for any advice they may need, be it academic or personal. They work closely with the two school nurses, one male and one female, to ensure the welfare of the students. Two Academic counselors are in charge of the liaison between the faculty and the Residence counselors for all matters relative to the students' studies and academic results.

An Excursions Director organizes trips and activities outside the school, such as field trips during the holidays. His department also takes care of the booking of plane or train tickets, the establishment of visas and residence permits as well as the organization of ski camps, concert outings and many other exciting events that take place in the Boarding House.
