Brillantmont (Lausanne).

General information
Founded in 1882, Brillantmont houses some 100 boarding boys and girls and about 50 day pupils. All these people live and study on the campus, which is located in a large park in the center of Lausanne, Switzerland.

Brillantmont has achieved a solid reputation in language teaching and in the preparation of pupils for British and American universities. For four generations , the aim of the founding family has been to create an atmosphere which favors the development of the personality of the pupils entrusted to it, and stimulates his/her intellectual, creative and sporting ability.

The school is situated in the center of Lausanne in a wonderful park which covers the area of 15.000 square meters. Lausanne offers extensive sports and cultural facilities.

A. American section.
The American section takes pupils preparing for entry university or an American college. The program offered is “High School” 9-th to 12-th grade.

After the 12-th grade pupils receive a “Graduation certificate “, subject to having obtained 24 credits in the course of the four years, i.e. 8 in French , another language or Art, 4 in English, 3 in Math, 3 Sciences, 2 in History and 4 in Physical Education.

In each of the four grades, pupils choose five subjects from those listed below:

9-th grade: French, English, Math2, History, Economics, Biology, Natural Economy, second foreign language (German, Italian, Spanish).

10-th grade: French, English, Math2, History, Economics, Biology, Natural Economy, Computer Science, second foreign language.

11-th grade: French, English, Calculus, Algebra2, American History, Economics, Chemistry, Natural Economy, second foreign language.

12-th grade: French, English, Calculus, Physics, American or European History, Economics, Chemistry, second foreign language and any other subjects not followed in the preceding grades or which may be continued as preparation for “Advanced Placement”.

13-th grade: The “Advanced Placement” program includes French, English, Calculus, Physics, American History, Economics, second foreign language.

B. British section.
Brillantmont offers “General Certificate of Education”(Cambridge Board) program, and prepares for the IGCSE(International General Certificate of Secondary Education) and “Advanced Levels”.

Pupils choose a minimum of 6 subjects at IGCSE level from the following: French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Natural Economy, Chemistry, Physics, History, Economics, Art. Each comprises 5 hours a week.

After success in the examination, with grade A or B, they qualify for further study in 3 subjects at “Advanced Level”, for 2 years of 5 to 6 hours of study per subject per week.

French is compulsory, with 10 hours per week.

Success with 3 “Advanced Levels” qualifies for entry to almost any university in the world.

C. Language and commerce section.
Modern Languages and General Culture.

In today’s society, mastery of foreign languages is the key to success in any future career.

Since Brillantmont is located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland the study of French is compulsory , and pupils practice it in the course of their extra-curricular activities , their time out of school, and their contacts with the local population.

Spanish - Spanish is tought at four different
levels
Teachers give instructions in their mother-tongue, and complement their teaching with cultural perspectives and trips to the country concerned , enabling the pupil to judge his/her progress and discover other waves of life.

Alongside the actual languages, pupils follow History and Geography courses to broaden their general knowledge and develop a greater understanding of the world in which they live.

D. Termly courses.
Pupils may follow courses for a complete term in the following sections: American Section; British Section; Swiss Section and Language Section.

E. Mini-program.
For pupils unable to devote a full year to learning languages we offer a mini-program in the second term. Since this falls within the ski season, pupils can combine their language studies with skiing in the Alps.

Pupils follow an intensive course in French or English. They study their chosen language for 18 hours a week. These hours incorporate the study of grammar, the use of authentic materials, the use of the computerised language laboratory, the Internet and a history/geography component to discover the local area. Pupils also study another language from those taught (French, English, Spanish, German, Italian), as well as 4 hours of sports per week.

Pupils are also encouraged to take a club during their stay.

F. Summer Courses.
During the months of July and August, come and enjoy our special cocktail made of intensive courses of French or English and Sports.

Two excursions a week, games, physical activities and entertainment will give you fun.

This program lasts between 2 and 6 weeks.

Requirements for entering.
Age: 14-19 years
17-19 years secondary school certificate
English level: 500 points by ”TOEFL” program.
Education Cost.
Academic year: 48.000Sfr.

Additional payments: Visa, Plane ticket, Insurance, Excursions, Textbooks.

Deposit: 6.000Sfr.

Entering deposit: 3.000Sfr.

In the case of refuse in entering, School has a right not to return the deposit.
