Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne (Lausanne) |

|
General information |
The Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne (EHL) is one of the world's best-known and most respected schools of hospitality management.
School’s mission is to educate students who are aiming for top careers in the international hospitality industry, especially in leading hotels, restaurants and hotel chains. As the first hotel school in the world, founded in 1893, the school has always been a leader in hospitality education.
Today they are a non-profit foundation, recognized worldwide as a model of excellence in hospitality management training. Our university-level professional studies are developed and taught in both English and French.
Since 1975, when the school moved to our present location about ten kilometers north of Lausanne, EHL has enjoyed the great advantage of having a purpose-built campus.
It has been regularly expanded since then and, in February 1998, we opened a new wing, which reflects the state of the art in educational infrastructure.

|
Educational infrastructure. |
The Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne is very well equipped, not only in terms of buildings but also in the advanced technology systems that are incorporated in them. On the EHL campus, you will find:
 |
49 different classrooms, accommodating classes ranging in size from 15 to 60 students. Eleven of the classrooms are fitted with multi-media equipment such as video conferencing. |
 |
a 200-seat, high-tech auditorium, which is used not only for lectures and presentations but also for international conferences, etc. |
 |
a 1000m2 library/media center, containing books, videos, magazines and newspapers from all over the world, and direct access to on-line information sources. |
The Mediatheque is part of the new wing of the campus. In addition to classrooms and auditoriums, it contains workrooms, meeting rooms, administration offices, and two floors of underground parking. The building has been designed to provide the best possible facilities for learning, with wide plate-glass windows, light wells, and a terrace giving a superb view of the Alps. The entire design makes it clear that this is a building intended for young people and gives the school an unmistakably dynamic image.

|
Technology |
You will do most of your written work and your personal administration on a laptop computer. Each semester, EHL supplies incoming students with the latest model on the market. There are approximately 1000 of these in use at any time throughout the School. Permanent free access to the Internet is available at different points throughout the campus. Each student also has a personal e-mail address. Fully equipped computers and printers are incorporated in study rooms as well.
 |
|
Student accommodation |
Most new students live on campus in one of five separate residential buildings. There are 300 single studios, with en suite shower and WC. Linen and towels are provided. The studios are cleaned regularly by EHL housekeeping staff. Many students find it an advantage not to have to share a room in their first, intensive semester at EHL. If you have a car, you can also have an individual reserved parking space: there are 365 in our underground garage and a further 200 outdoors.
Sports facilities. Reflecting the growing volume of sport-related vacations - not to mention the need for physical exercise to complement all the mental exercise our program demands - students are encouraged to practice at least one sport. There are three tennis courts and a well-equipped gymnasium on campus as well.

Academic Programs |
The Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne has developed two separate academic programs to meet the needs of students with different profiles and career aspirations. Both programs have been designed with substantial input from hospitality managers who know what the market is looking for. The International Hospitality Management Program is the School's flagship program, focusing on management techniques and issues, and providing students an accredited Bachelor of Science degree. This program is completed in 7 semesters (six on-campus plus one internship). Your total invested time is somewhat longer, however, as a pre-requisite of the program is that you have a minimum of one year of practical experience before beginning. Graduates move on to management positions throughout the industry. EHL's second academic track is a 3-semester Associate of Science degree program called Management of Hotel Operations. Here, the focus is on learning the tools of the trade from an operational rather than a strategic viewpoint. Students spend two semesters on-campus immersed in an intensive curriculum and then work as interns for a semester in a hospitality enterprise of their choice. Graduates of this program can quickly move into positions of responsibility at the departmental level within a hotel, for example.
 |
|
Curriculum |
In this program, you will study a wide range of subjects. This is because a successful hospitality manager needs to be comfortable not only with the operational aspects of running a hotel or restaurant, but also with the managerial challenges that have to be met if the business is to succeed in the long run, such as marketing strategy, financial planning and human resources policies. There is also a cultural - even artistic - element in the hospitality business, and you will study this as well. The International Hospitality Management Program therefore covers a broad array of distinct, but interlocking subjects. The program lasts a total of seven semesters, one of which (semester 4) is spent as a practical intern in a hotel, restaurant or another kind of hospitality operation. All in all, it's a tough program. So challenging, in fact, that it is not possible to enter straight from secondary school. The school wants you to have at least one year of practical experience first, so when you begin with your academic studies here, you will already have seen the hospitality world and will have some idea of what it is like to work, manage and succeed in this environment. If you haven't worked in the industry, you can also be admitted, but in this case you'll need to complete a special training program that has been developed to introduce you to the practical side of hospitality, the Professional Module.
 |
|
Distinct but interlocking subjects |
The curriculum of the International Hospitality Management Program was developed by EHL in collaboration with hoteliers and other professionals from the hospitality industry. Students are asked to define the profile they look for in a well-trained graduate. Which academic and practical disciplines should be strengthened in order to make our graduates as attractive as possible to industry recruiters worldwide? What do students need to know to be effective in their jobs, both in the short-term as well as the long term? The result of this exercise is the following basic curriculum. Like any good plan of studies, it is continuously being developed, refined and updated. It consists of a Professional Module concentrating on the acquisition of practical skills, followed by a seven-semester degree program focused on management. Your management studies commence when the Professional Module has been completed. Here, you will study the following subjects in depth:
Marketing and Tourism.
As a hospitality manager, what is the impact on your business of developments in the tourism and travel industries? You will analyze these trends, along with promotional, pricing and distribution strategies for selecting and attracting a target market segment and maximizing profitability.
Economics and Legal Studies.
You will be introduced to business economics and the legal environment as they apply to the hospitality industry. Topics covered include monetary policies, foreign exchange mechanisms and the role of the state in the economy.
Finance.
Accounting principles and the fundamentals of financial management form an introduction to this important area of study. Afterward, you will move on to more advanced subjects such as investment strategy, financial structuring and asset management.
Human Resources.
You will examine organizational behavior, motivation and group dynamics, followed by in-depth study of the management-related aspects of human resources: labor costs, productivity, training and administrative challenges as well as communication and leadership.
Facilities Management.
You will be introduced to the world of technical infrastructure, building techniques and management, as well as property operations and engineering.
Foodservice Management.
How do you analyze costs, pricing and profitability in restaurant and catering operations? You will be introduced to foodservice control, marketing and management and learn to carry out computerized financial analysis using specialized information technology applications.
Accommodation Management.
You will study the essential principles of front office operations, reservations systems and revenue management, as well as the day-to-day aspects of rooms management, including guest relations, housekeeping and welcoming procedures.
Information Technology.
When you begin the academic program at EHL, you will be equipped with a laptop computer on which you will do much of your class work and personal administration. In computer workshops, you will enhance your skills in word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, and you will deepen your understanding of the Internet as a business tool. Later, you will study the impact of IT on the micro-and macro-environments.
Languages and Communication.
During your studies at EHL, you will work at improving your ability to speak and write foreign languages. In addition, classes in management communication, both oral and written, will sharpen your skills as an effective leader in a variety of business situations.
